Age Difference in Relationships
When it comes to the topic age difference in relationships, opinions have been traditionally very divided. While some people believe that an age difference in relationship really does not matter and age is just a number, others think that dating somebody much older is inappropriate or just weird.
Why people are divided about an age difference in relationships
When it comes to an age difference in relationships, many men and women think about pretty young women dating men who could easily be their dad. In other words, men who might be twice their age or even older. Very few would argue that beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. However, the real question is: Why are people so divided about an age difference in relationships?
The answer is not as easy as one would think. On the one hand, many women cannot understand why a young, beautiful woman would be attracted by a man who looks like her dad. This fraction typically comes with the argument that a young, attractive woman could easily date a handsome, fit young guy around her own age. Being with a more mature man is unthinkable for some of them. What is often overlooked is that attraction is more than just about the physical appearance of someone. In fact, there are plenty of women who are not into fit, cocky young lad types at all.
An age difference in relationships does not matter if you know what you are looking for
Women who choose to date mature men are often less focused on looks alone. On the contrary, they appreciate the life experience and stability a more mature partner can offer them. This is something they often miss from young guys who are just at the beginning of their professional career. With an older man it can be much easier to plan the future. He can offer financial stability and support. Usually he knows where he stands in life and what he wants. More often than not, he has progressed so far in his career that he can offer a substantially more aspirational lifestyle.
Age difference in relationship – no more than a number?
If you look at it from this perspective, there are indeed some sound arguments why an age difference in relationships is not necessarily a bad thing. First of all, physical attraction is subjective. Being at the same life stage and sharing the same lifestyle is not a guarantee for happiness. At the end of the day, it is much more important to know what you are looking for. If you bear in mind that your feelings should be at the core of all dating, an age difference in relationships is nothing else as a number. It is up to you what meaning you allow this number to have on your choices.
